FAQ's - Renting Our Goats

Goat rental businesses are not in every town and most people aren't yet familiar with them, so the number of frequently asked questions are many and broad. We have divided these questions in sections and some of the answers link back to other pages.

Frequently asked questions - Renting Our Goats

  • Can I rent the goats for just a day?
We rent goats to manage land and vegetation.  We have had jobs of all types and sizes.  The schedule and your location are the main variables to availability for small or large projects.  So, sometimes the herds might be at a job for one day, but most of our work is more commonly measured in weeks.
  • Can I interact with the goats when they are working on my land?
You can watch, talk to, sing to and take pictures of the goats all that you want, whenever you want.... from outside of the fence!  But we don't allow interacting with the goats without FlockWorks staff present and unequivocally not through or over the electric fence!

With prior arrangements we are glad to bring out a goat or two, if it can be worked out.  We are even let you in the fence with the herd, if the correct timing can be arranged.
  • Can I feed the goats?
NO!  We really do not want anyone feeding our goats.  This is especially true of trying to feed goats through or over the fence!

Perhaps at some point we will make a page dedicated to why, but for now know that the reasons are many, varied and some... quite serious.
  • Can my dog play with the goats?
Absolutely not.  Even the most docile little 8 pound dog still has some prey drive in there somewhere and it can really kick in when a prey animal reacts and a whole herd runs from it.  We want our goats familiar with dogs being outside of their fence, but not familiar with dogs directly. The vast majority of goat injuries and deaths each year in the US are from pet dogs that were "fine" and thought to be no threat at all.
  • Will the goats smell?
We will be very surprised if you can smell the female (doe) herd at all, any time of the year.  The males (bucks) have an odor starting around mid-August, peaking in September through November and fading from there.  The wethers (fixed males) do not have any odor themselves, but they are often with the bucks.  So occasionally when they go from the buck herd to the doe herd, they will carry some buck smell with them.
