Mapping

This page is here to assist with creating a map to aid in the communication of expectations and to assist with the quoting process.

A good map is key to our quoting process.  We need to plan access to drop off and pick up the goats, which is often (usually) in different sections. The total area has to be calculated, divided up the land in a way that the size of each section meets your land management goals. We need to plan how the goats go from one section to another, keeping in mind that they never leave the net fencing, under any normal circumstances.

Using Google Maps is documented below, but feel free to use other methods.  Some people have printed out a satellite view and marked it up and then scanned or photographed it and sent it that way.  Occasionally we have some other highly creative methods presented. As long as we can located it and line it up with other maps (we look at many different sources) than that should be great!

We ask people to mark up, or otherwise create a map so that we can get a more accurate initial quote with less wasted time for all parties.

The steps are fairly simple to create a Google My Map on a computer or laptop.
1. Go to Google My Map info page.
2. Click the "Get Started" link. (If you have ever made any Google My Maps before, they will display here.)
3. Click "CREATE A NEW MAP" in the red box near the top left corner.
4. A large map (typically of the whole country) will display. Zoom (double click) in OR search to find your location.
5. On the left menu, click The down arrow next to "Base map" and choose "satellite". (If some other view works, that's fine also.)
6. Choose the fifth icon below the search bar (looks like lines connecting small circles, see below) and start drawing and experimenting.
7. Ideally connect the lines forming some type of shape: A circle, square, rectangle OR some totally irregular "shape" that roughly indicates the area you wish the goats to manage.
8. Name the "shape", something useful, especially if there is going to be more than one target area. Repeat as for another area, as needed.
9. You can (if you need to) edit the area(s) by clicking on the dots at the transitions and dragging them around.
10. When complete, click the "Share" button (It will then ask for a map title and description, if you haven't jumped steps and done that already.) AND enable link sharing. Then just copy and past the link and send it whatever way is easiest for you. (email, text, etc.)

The link will look something like this:
