The Difference...

What's the difference between various vegetation clearing/land management techniques?

And what, if any, difference is there between various goat rental companies?

Land Management Techniques

A brief overview of pros and cons of restoring land with various methods.

(We aren't going to compare the Suffocation/Mulching methods because they are typically only done for small areas and comparisons don't apply.)

+ Readily available services in most areas.
+ Thorough clearing.
+ Rapid deployment and results.
+ Pricing typically favorable for open, flat and largely visible areas.

- Scatters seeds.  This starts to establish new problem vegetation.
- Largely non-selective.
- Loud / noisy.
- Pricing typically unfavorable on challenging terrain or with obstacles.

+ Complete Clear.  There can be basically nothing left.
+ Usually a very quick process.

- Service is not commonly available.
- Costly.
- Loud.
- Roots of established trees can be easily damaged.
- Scatters Seeds. This starts to establish new problem vegetation.
- Can easily disperse rhizomes and start new plants from the earth being moved.

+ Quick.
+ Complete.
+ Some native plants benefit from fire.

- Risk of fire spreading.
- Usually requires exact weather timing.
- Almost always requires the fire department and considerable manpower.
- Largely non-selective.

*It is very, VERY difficult for us to say anything positive about herbicides.  It is believed that all herbicides damage the soil and soil life.  Basically, all herbicides end up in our water and food and (seemingly), all are eventually proven to be dangerous, or even deadly.

+ Quick kill.

- TOO MANY TO LIST (See above statement.)

+ Great exercise.
+ Economical.
+ Quiet.
+ Easy to evaluate and control what is removed.

- Labor intensive.
- Time consuming.
- Potentially hazardous on rough terrain or with hidden hazards.
- Ticks.  Biting bugs. Poison ivy/sumac/oak.
- Commonly (but not always) scatters and plants weed seeds.

+ Effective!  Goats do a great job!  See our Before & After page
+ Natural.  No poisons.
+ Application of time-released fertilizer.
+ Improves the soil microbiome and environment if done properly.
+ Very often cost competitive.  This is especially true for challenging land.
+ Quiet.  Relaxing.  Peaceful.
+ Entertaining.  Goats can be very interesting to simply sit and observe.
+ Engaging.  When goats are on public land, the attention they garner often helps in attracting help and volunteers!

- A complete clear is only accomplished over time, unless the goats are really "pushed" and optional services are utilized.
- Slower process, even on the first pass.
- Service not readily available in all areas.
- Often a significant waiting list, usually months out...  and sometimes, especially in the west, years out.
- Effectiveness varies (to some degree) by season.
- Not generally a quick process, especially for larger areas with moderate sized goat herds.

FlockWorks currently has no competition in our market.  But, we are out to change that!  We actively recruit, mentor and support new goat rental companies, locally, regionally and nationally.

FlockWorks Techniques.

We truly hope that when we have completion, that they will manage their herds in similar ways, but, the reality is, that most goat rental companies do not do what we do.  In order to provide better management, we do, or offer, the following:

1. We keep our herds on pasture/browse year-round.
2. We utilize regenerative methods of agriculture.
3. We manage health primarily with nutrition and movement.
4. We've developed methods for more thorough clearing options with good nutrition for the herds.
5. We manage our herds with limited external inputs. No feed, grain, etc...
6. We attempt to work within nature, not against it.
7. We do our best to align our work with the seasons.
8. We offer more choices for our customers.
9. We offer more options for our customers.
10. We utilize, and in some cases, develop our own portable infrastructure (fences, electronics, shelters, transportation) to support the above principles and keep the herds heathy and happy.
