Terms and Names

The names and terms used for goat rental are varied and broad!  Most of the names reflect the management style of the goat owners or the desired goals of running the goats in a managed way.  Here we attempt to catalog and define them.  There are links that may be helpful if you want to learn more.  Here is a good paper on grazing terminology.

Goat Rental Names

We usually use the term "Goat Rental" but others use many other names.
Grazing Goats
Guided Goat Grazing

This is obviously our favorite name AND our tagline.  We don't have any protection on the name, but it is distinctly ours because we believe it represents how we work and what we offer.  More here

Basically, managing the goats to meet the landowners goals.

Goats Eat Weeds
GoatScaping

The term "GoatScaping" is probably the fastest growing name right now. It currently is mostly used to mean managing vegetation with goats, but originally it meant very intensive managment.

We aren't fond of the name because it implies that when the goats go through, things are neat and tidy, like it was landscaped.  That is generally not the case... certainly not for the first few visits at least.

Goats at rest
Contract Grazing

Insurance companies usually use this name/term.  The name represents what is happening accurately.  Some type of agreement is made and the goats eat to accomplish a task.

Sometimes that task is simply mowing, other times it's more weed or invasive eradication.

Goat in Poison Ivy
Goat Rental

The most generic, and until recently, the most used name for goats managing vegetation and land.

Goat in brush
Rent-A-Goat

This name/term was once used like the name/term "Goat Rental", rather generically applied.  Basically like "Kleenex" is used generically.  It is now mostly used by a well regarded company based out of California.

Baby Goat Kid
Prescribed Grazing

The most common of the technical based names. The USDA (PDF) says the following:

"Prescribed grazing is the controlled harvest of
vegetation, with grazing or browsing animals..."

Tough Goat
Targeted Grazing

This is the name/term that most challenges our understanding of goats.  This method directs the animals to graze certain plants, but not others in an attempt to encourage some vegetation while driving others down or even out.

Our goats certainly have favorites, but it varies by time of year and what stage various plants are in.

Goats love weeds!
Conservation Grazing

Usually almost synonymous with Targeted Grazing, but with a  heavier focus on protecting native plants.

Both Targeted grazing and Conservation grazing have handbooks and even certifications available.

A (partial) herd of goats.
Management-Intensive Grazing.

Refers to grazing systems where animals are allowed to graze only a small portion of the pasture (an individual paddock) while other paddocks are rested and allowed to recover.

Sometimes also called restorative grazing.

Goats in a glade.
Mob Grazing

This name is more commonly associated with one style of regenerative land managment, but it applies to what we do as well.  We basically bring a mob of goats and limit their area for a controlled effect.

Intense Goat!
Rotational Grazing

Also a name/term most associated with traditional farm management, but it's partly what we are doing as well... in most cases.

Goat on down tree.
Goat Mow (Mowing)

This is the worst of the names/terms, from our perspective.  Goats do not prefer grass and don't generally eat in a way that resembles mowing.  This name sets up false expectations.
